Manchester-based Urban Canyons has signed a co-production deal with the Smithsonian Networks and ZDF for its latest drama documentary.

Warrior Women will be the fourth series it’s had backed by the American and Germany networks, following Ninja Shadow Warriors, Samurai Warrior Queens and Samurai Head-Hunters.

“We are delighted to be a lead co-producer for this new series. Urban Canyon has been a great creative partner, producing a beautifully filmed trilogy for us on Japanese warrior culture, and has also proved its skill at finding European partners that share our channel values,” said David Royle, Smithsonian Networks’s executive VP for programming and production.

The 3 x 52 minute series begins filming this month in locations around the world and will be delivered in HD and UHD in the summer of next year.

It’s already had pre-sales in Scandinavia, Switzerland, Austria, Slovenia, Spain and Belgium.

“This deal involving such a range of European broadcasters and vital support from the European MEDIA Creative Europe proves how important inter-European cooperation has become in a market that is increasingly relying on co-production to produce high-end history programming,” added Sebastian Peiter, managing director of Urban Canyons.

Warrior Women will examine female soldiers from the 5th Century BC to the present day, through reenactments, CGI and interviews with experts.
