Umpf spearheads low-energy cookery campaign for leading kitchen appliance brand

Leeds and London-based Umpf has created an energy-saving campaign for kitchen appliance brand Belling, which aims to help save the nation tens of millions every year in fuel costs.

Central to the campaign is a new, free, energy-saving recipe book where each recipe is a low-energy use version of an existing favourite.

The campaign includes PR, influencer, social media and paid activity and will provide practical – and topical – cooking advice and energy saving tips during the cost-of-living crisis.

With research showing that, based on using a typical, 2,000W cooking appliance for one hour a day at current rates, households will spend £208.93* every year in fuel costs, Belling’s Energy-Saving Recipe Book has been designed to reduce both energy use and save money on ingredients.

Using the cookbook, households can save £49.32 every year in fuel costs alone, with some dishes using up to 80% less energy than their traditional recipes.

A home economist developed each bespoke energy-saving recipe such as Moroccan sausage and chickpea tagine, chicken tikka kebabs, Thai green prawn curry, through to a cost-busting Sunday roast traybake. As well as delicious, budget-friendly dishes to cook and enjoy, the book features tips and tricks to pinch the pounds around the kitchen.

Amy Hutchinson, a spokesperson for Belling, said: “Energy prices remain high and many households are feeling the pinch, but every family deserves good quality home-cooked food on the table.

“We’ve been at the heart of British kitchens for more than a century, so we’ve used some of that know-how to create lower-energy recipes that everyone can enjoy whilst saving money.

“Each dish is a time and money-saver which, over the course of a year, puts a nice sum back in the pockets of families across the country – and if every family got involved, collectively it’s a serious saving. Our free, downloadable recipe book helps save money in the kitchen, without sacrificing taste, nutrition, or enjoyment.”

According to latest ONS data there are 19.4m families in the UK and if each family cooked for just an hour per day under current energy tariffs, it equates to a £4.1bn collective annual energy spend, so using lower-energy recipes could save the nation tens of millions in fuel costs every year.
