Tributes have been paid to iconic Yorkshire broadcaster Dave Callaghan, who has died aged 63 after a heart attack.

Callaghan, who worked for BBC Radio Leeds and Look North, was taken ill on Friday and died on Monday night.

He’d worked in sports journalism for over 45 years, working as sports editor at BBC Radio Leeds and as a commentator for Leeds United.

Yorkshire County Cricket Club said he was a “much loved-personality” and “held in the highest regard”.

And former England captain Michael Vaughan tweeted that “we have lost one of life’s great men.”

Sanjiv Buttoo, editor of BBC Radio Leeds, said: “Dave Callaghan (Cally) was a true gentleman; he was loved and respected equally by his colleagues and those associated with many sports but most notably cricket.

“He was warm and charming and that friendly and knowledgeable voice will be missed by us all. On behalf of all at Radio Leeds and BBC Yorkshire I would like to send our deepest condolences to his family and friends.”

Radio Leeds have confirmed they will be airing a special tribute programme tonight from 6-7pm.
