Simon Mayo is to continue to co-host BBC Radio 5 live’s flagship film review show despite announcing his departure from Radio 2.

Mayo yesterday confirmed he would be leaving the drivetime show he has hosted since 2010 to concentrate on a two-book deal with the publisher Transworld and TV and film projects involving his previous books.

Many have said that the backlash generated by the BBC’s decision to appoint Jo Whiley as co-host alongside Mayo earlier this year had triggered Mayo’s move.

But while refusing to confirm that was the reason behind the decision, Mayo has said he will be staying on with the BBC as co-host of its self-described “flagship” film review show, Kermode and Mayo’s Film Review.

One of the BBC’s most downloaded podcasts, the show – which is broadcast live on 5 live between 2 and 4pm each Friday afternoon – has run for 17 years.
