Scottport for the day: Stockport Station renamed to celebrate Scott Mills’ debut Radio 2 Breakfast Show

A Greater Manchester train station has pulled out all the stops to celebrate new Radio 2 Breakfast Show presenter Scott Mills this morning, with Stockport Station renamed Scottport for the day to mark Mills’ debut.

Radio 2’s new Breakfast Show traffic and travel presenter, Ellie Brennan, broke the news to Mills, saying she thought it would be nice to get him a present for his new show, but things had all got a little bit out of hand: “I ended up using my travel credentials and connection here, and in the way that things do on Radio 2, things have got a little bit out of hand,” she explained.

Mills was also joined on air by Good Morning Sunday and Pause For Thought host The Reverend Kate Bottley, live on location from Scottport Station, who was joined by Stockport County FC mascot Vernon Bear and the Mayor of Stockport, Suzanne Wyatt.

Wyatt said: “I have agreed that it can be called ‘Scottport’ for today. I think it makes people smile and the more we can do to make people smile, the better.”

The head of Stockport Station, introduced to listeners as “the lovely Lisa” added: “The team has been working so hard right the way through the night to change Stockport, to Scottport…All the information screens have been changed…All the signage has been changed from Stockport to Scottport…A whole new town, a whole new name, just to welcome Scott Mills.”

Mills opened his first show saying: “Here we go then, Monday the 27th of January 2025 and this is The Scott Mills Breakfast Show on BBC Radio 2, and I can’t believe I am finally saying those words…I’m gonna give it absolutely everything I’ve got. I really hope you enjoy it. Let’s go!”

Mills’ much-discussed first track played on the show was, as predicted on Friday’s One Show, Robbie Williams’ Rock DJ (Better Man version), and Mills followed this with Kylie’s Spinning Around.

Stoke’s finest crooner, Williams himself, also called in to the show: “I’m just ringing you because I know today’s your first Breakfast show on Radio 2, and I’ve just woken up to loads of messages from people going, ‘Scott’s playing the new version of Rock DJ, it’s his first song’, so thank you,” he said.
