Game-changing hydrogen tech moves out of the lab with new deal: Aims to solve industry’s biggest energy challenge

Clyde Hydrogen Systems has signed a memorandum of understanding with Hebrides-based green hydrogen producer and distributor, PlusZero.

The agreement will see Clyde Hydrogen demonstrate its groundbreaking decoupled electrolyser technology for the first time outside of the lab.

Glasgow-headquartered Clyde Hydrogen’s breakthrough technology aims to reliably deliver high pressure green hydrogen safely at scale and at low cost. This has the potential to match renewable energy with hydrogen production in a more productive way than currently possible – solving one of the industry’s biggest challenges to date.

Last December, Clyde Hydrogen launched a new funding round aimed at attracting up to £5m of new investment designed to speed up the commercialisation of its innovative technology.

PlusZero has secured funding support from the Scottish Government’s Emerging Energies Technology Fund (EETF) to develop its first green hydrogen production facility at the Creed Hydrogen Skills and Innovation Centre in Stornoway.

Launching in October 2025, this collaborative project with the Western Isles Council and the University of the Highlands and Islands, North, West & Hebrides uniquely integrates commercial production of green hydrogen and oxygen, hydrogen technology training, and cutting-edge research and field testing of next-generation electrolyser technology.

As part of the terms of the agreement, PlusZero will support Clyde Hydrogen by deploying one of Clyde Hydrogen’s commercial demonstrator electrolysers and will support the operation and testing of the demonstrator for a period of at least 6 months. The MoU also gives PlusZero an option to purchase an initial order of 10 MW electrolyser capacity from Clyde Hydrogen.

James Peck, Clyde Hydrogen’s CEO, said: “I’m delighted to sign this agreement with PlusZero who we believe are an ideal partner to deliver our commercial demo. Last month, we achieved a milestone technical breakthrough in our technology and to already sign our first commercial agreement is testament to the game-changing potential of our pioneering technology and commercial traction we are already receiving.”

David Amos, PlusZero founder and managing director, added: “At PlusZero, our mission is to accelerate the availability of affordable green hydrogen, empowering our customers to achieve their decarbonization goals. Clyde Hydrogen’s ground-breaking electrolyser technology offers a transformative leap in cost efficiency and production flexibility. We are thrilled to support their efforts in bringing this cutting-edge Scottish produced solution to market.”
