Gone Girl actress Rosamund Pike has teamed up with Manchester-based charity the Mines Advisory Group (MAG) to support a campaign to clear unexploded bombs.
The campaign, called Unlock the Land, aims to fund a team of women to clear unexploded bombs in Laos, which the landmine clearance charity said is the ‘most heavily bombed country in the world per capita’.
The campaign includes a fundraising appeal to help families affected by unexploded bombs in the region.
Actor and MAG ambassador Rosamund Pike said: “Clearance means kids can play safely and entire communities can develop and thrive instead of living in fear of bombs.
“These communities need help right now and that’s why I’m backing the work of MAG and the brave deminers of Laos.”
Using trained staff and special machinery, the teams at MAG will locate and destroy landmines and unexploded bombs, in a bid to free communities from fear.
Darren Cormack, MAG’s CEO, added: “Clearing unexploded bombs is the first step in development, making areas safe for communities to build livelihoods, provide food and education and live without fear.
“Our vision is for a Laos where women, girls, boys and men live free from the fear and danger of unexploded bombs, where fear is not a barrier to people taking control of their futures.”
The charity said donations to the campaign before 24th July will be doubled by the UK government under the UK Aid Match Scheme, which is run by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.
