Alison Gow, Reach’s Editor in Chief for Regional Digital, has hit back at trolls “celebrating job losses at my employer”.
Yesterday Reach, which owns the Manchester Evening News and Liverpool Echo, announced it was to cut 550 jobs, equating to 12% of its total workforce.
Gow, who is also President of the Society of Editors, wrote: “Opening Twitter to see people celebrating job losses at my employer is very strange. Who in their right mind would say ‘Yay, Pret is closing outlets – they got my coffee order wrong once!’
“But news publisher shedding people in global pandemic = excellent. Also, for the hard of thinking, Reach is owned by shareholders – no “media mogul” involved.
“And if you believe the Mirror is Tory-supporting you need to go lie down in a dark room.”
