Pro-Russia hackers claim to be behind council cyber attacks

Cyber attacks targeted at council websites, including Salford, Bury, Trafford and Tameside were from pro-Russian hackers.

The group, NoName057(16) claimed responsibility on X for the attacks, which it said were because “Russophobic UK authorities continue to sponsor the criminal Kiev regime.”

It stated that it had hit a number of websites across the UK with a DDoS (distributed denial-of-service) attack – this effectively floods the website with traffic to take them out of action.

“Whilst DDoS attacks are relatively low in sophistication and impact, they can cause disruption by preventing legitimate users from accessing online services,” said a spokesperson at the National Cyber Security Centre, who confirmed that they had provided guidance to the affected councils.

Councils said that the attack had temporarily limited access to websites, but no personal data had been compromised.
