Peter Kay’s Car Share picked up two awards at last night’s BAFTA Television Awards.

The Manchester-set sitcom, which is currently filming a second series, won best male performance in a comedy programme for its title star, and also the scripted comedy award.

Collecting his award for the first category, Kay stood in virtual silence for a minute before saying “thanks” and walking off to applause. “For me, speech of the night,” said host Graham Norton.

In other news on the night, veteran HUll actor Sir Tom Courtenay took home best supporting actor for his role in ITV’s Unforgotten, while Coronation Street was pipped to the soap/continuing drama prize by EastEnders.
