Joe Cole has been awarded Best Actor at the British Independent Film Awards (BIFA) for his role as a Liverpudlian boxer, Billy, who was incarcerated in a notorious Thai prison.
Cole was up against Steve Coogan (Stan & Ollie), Joaquin Phoenix (You Were Never Really Here), Charlie Plummer (Lean on Pete) and Rupert Everett (The Happy Prince).
“Working with Joe was a dream – playing the role of Billy Moore was demanding in the extreme there’s no stunt boxing or pulled punches from Joe Cole here!” said producer Sol Papadopoulos of Liverpool’s Hurricane Films.
Based on a true story, A Prayer Before Dawn, premiered in Cannes last Spring and has since received international critical acclaim.
The film was directed by Jean Stephane Sauvaire (Johnny Mad Dog) and was a co-production between Hurricane Films, Señorita pictures and Indochina productions.
