A new inbound tourism website has launched to promote the North East’s visitor attractions.
Visit North East England will be the only region-wide tourism website, that includes all the local authority areas.
The project has been led by Newcastle Airport, supported by NewcastleGateshead Initiative, Visit County Durham, Northumberland Tourism, North and South Tyneside Councils, Tees Valley Combined Authority and Sunderland City Council.
“I am very passionate about promoting the North East, as I strongly believe that the inbound tourism project will be of great benefit to the whole of our region,” explained Jen Rea, the airport’s newly appointed Inbound Tourism Manager.
“Being from Newcastle myself, I have first-hand experience of how exciting and charming the region is – so I know that it will appeal to a wide range of different tourist demographics.”
A year in the making, it’s part of a wider strategy to target “thousands of extra tourists from across Europe and beyond” with the ultimate aim of boosting the local economy.
“The tourism project is set to be hugely beneficial to the region by increasing the number of visitors coming to the North East through ‘Your Airport’” added airport Chief Executive, Nick Jones.
“There has been nothing similar to this done by any other UK airport, and I am looking forward to seeing the region’s reaction to this exciting project.”
The site includes a detailed page for each area of the region and includes videos, written content and photographs. It will be translated into several languages, including Chinese Simplified, Spanish, French, German and Dutch over the coming weeks.
“One of the biggest opportunities for growth in the North East is tourism and we know that our culture and visitor attractions are defining attributes that make our region distinctive and special,” added Councillor Iain Malcolm, Leader of South Tyneside Council and Chairman of Newcastle International Airport.
“Through strong partnership working and collaboration with regional and national partners, we now have our very own inbound tourism strategy that will continue to build the global profile of the North East.”
