National World sells software firm for £3.5m

David Montgomery, National World chair

National World has sold former Midlands News Association (MNA) subsidiary Press Computer Systems to US tech firm Naviga for £3.5m.

The Yorkshire Post publisher acquired the software firm as part of its £11.5m takeover of the parent company, and Express & Star publisher, last year.

National World chairman David Montgomery said Naviga would be a better home the PCS business, and his own company has entered into a five-year deal to continue using the software firm’s services.

Montgomery, said: “Newspaper production technology is not our core expertise and so we believe PCS is being transferred into good hands with Naviga, which is best placed to develop that business while continuing to serve National World’s modernisation and automation needs for the long term.”

As well as the Express & Star, last year’s MNA deal included the Shropshire Star and a range of paid-for and free weeklies, farming and lifestyle magazines.
