Mark Thomas, the editor of the Daily Post is to leave Trinity Mirror next month.
After 40 years in journalism he says he plans to pursue a number of “new opportunities and projects.”
His career included 14 years as a regional correspondent for The Press Association. During that time, he covered the militant uprising, the disasters at Hillsborough and Heysel, the Warrington Bombing and the murder of James Bulger.
He is one of the leading authorities on the Bulger crime, having gone on to write a book about the case.
“I’ve had such a rewarding 40 years in journalism. It’s been a fascinating journey and the camaraderie I have enjoyed has been every bit as important as the buzz and excitement of news coverage,” he said.
‘’I am very excited to be moving into a new phase in which I know the experience I have been lucky enough to gain working in the industry will be absolutely invaluable. I find it hard to believe it has been 40 years and while I know that the time is right for me to move on, I will greatly miss working with all my friends and colleagues at wonderful Trinity Mirror titles.
‘’The last few years have seen some of the most remarkable change in media history and it has been terrific to be at the heart of so much innovation and creativity.’’
He started out in 1975 at Wirral Newspapers, before heading to the Post and Echo and then PA. In 1997, he returned to the Echo as deputy news editor. During his time at the paper he also took roles as investigations editor and special projects editor, before becoming assistant editor, then deputy editor of the Liverpool Daily Post.
He succeeded Jane Wolstenholme as editor in 2007 and became editor of the Daily Post in Wales last year.
His replacement is to be announced “in due course.”
