Manchester United launches pink kit in tribute to Evening News

While Mourinho retained the headlines for his “respect, respect, respect” quotes, it was also revealed last night that Manchester United would be selling a new away kit today.

The club’s first ever pink shirt has been inspired by The Football Pink newspaper.

Designed by Adidas, it harks back to the Manchester Evening News publication, which was printed every Saturday afternoon – before its closure in 2007.

The move was announced in the matchday programme, which had a wraparound stating “The Pink is Back!”.

“The Football Pink was an institution,” reads the promotion.

“With the deafening roar of the terraces still ringing in their ears, supporters clamoured to get their hands on the famous paper. Seconds later their fingertips were covered in fresh ink.”

Ironically, considering what followed the match, as Mourinho stormed out of the press conference, the text continued:

“How could the MEN Football Pink get out so quickly – hitting the streets just minute after the referee’s final whistle?

“The answer: a wonderfully orchestrated symphony of hacks at grounds, copytakers, sub-editors, compositors, printers and van drivers.”

“[…] “On matchdays, chief United writer, David Meek was a prince in the world of The Pink, crafting great prose as the action unfolded before him.”
