Manchester tech disruptor Wakelet to appoint administrators

Lawyers from law firm JMW have formally informed the court in Manchester that tech firm Wakelet intends to appoint administrators. The notification was made on April 8.

The firm’s entry at Companies House shows that it currently has no directors as Jamil Khalil, Scott Fletcher, and Carlo Nizam all resigned on April 10. A fourth director, Ohad Finkelstein resigned on March 11.

Its last set of accounts to the end of 2023, unaudited and abbreviated, show a decline in the business’ cash at hand from £5m to just short of £2m.

Wakelet tagged itself as “The all in one content platform” sought to link different social media accounts, multimedia sources and websites into collections – or “Wakes” for clients, and in doing so save, organise and share a collection of links, media and images in a powerful, visual manner.

It was launched around 14 years ago by Jamil Khalil who, struggling to find investment, turned to LinkedIn to ask for people to get involved in return for a share in the new business.

“I love Manchester and I want to make a real difference in the city. I’ve thought for some time that the web is a bit of a mess really, with information scattered all over place. How can we make sense of it all? How can we put relevant information in one place so it’s easier to find? Hopefully Wakelet can help that,” he explained.

Perhaps inspired by the social media buzz, Wakelet’s shareholders register reportedly read like a who’s who of Northern, and beyond, celebrity from the worlds of sport, business and politics. The likes of Manchester United/City stars Rio Ferdinand and Joleon Lescott, Urban Splash founder and property magnate Tom Bloxham, several members of the Boohoo Kamani family and former politicians Chuka Umunna and Sayeeda Warsi are all believed to have invested in the business in the past.

Its users and partners have included FC United, Manchester International Festival, the EuroScience Open Forum, Harvard University, FC Barcelona, Atlanta Hawks, Airbus and Experian.
