Manchester indie behind the Mormons are Coming closes

The owners of Manchester indie, Peggy Pictures, have decided to shut it down.

However, they said it wasn’t another victim of the downturn in the sector, instead they were planning to return to specialise in digital and social media content.

The indie was founded in 2018 by Manning Director, Ida Bruusgaard and Creative Director, Danni Davis.

In a joint statement on LinkedIn they said:

“After 8 brilliant years of running our beloved production company, we are closing Peggy’s doors.

“But rather than it being an entirely sad occasion, we want to take this opportunity to reflect on some of our highlights and thank the people who made it all possible.

“Starting with 3 commissions for BBC Radio 1 Stories, the first one with co-pro partners Wisebuddah and Clare Chadburn / Paul Thomas, we committed full-time to Peggy in ’18, and produced our first series: Mimi On A Mission: Sex Ed (CBBC/iPlayer).

“A huge thanks to then CBBC Controller Cheryl Taylor and one of our biggest supporters comm ed Kez Margrie. They took a punt on us and new host Mimi Missfit, who was amazing and helped us earn Children’s BAFTA and Broadcast Digital Awards noms in ’19. She also fronted our series Digital Detox, Lockdown Party (shot remotely during Covid) and Mimi & Co.”

The company also co-produced the Grierson Award winning documentary  Trial of Ratko Mladic, plus BBC Laugh Lessons for BBC Three and The Mormons Are Coming (BBC2).

Its final documentary, What Freya Did Next (CBBC) aired in October last year.

“We worked hard, we had fun, we survived Covid, we learnt a lot, we made mistakes, we had highs and lows, but above all, as 2 good friends with shared values, we worked with some ace people to make TV we’ll be forever proud of,” they stated.

“Thank you to everyone who played their part, big or small in the life of Peggy Pictures.”

Prior to setting up Peggy Pictures, Bruusgaard produced Channel 4’s ‘Sharon Horgan: How To Be Married,’ ‘How To Have A Midlife Crisis,’ ‘Phil’s Empty Homes Giveaway’ and BBC’s ‘Heir Hunters’.

Davis, meanwhile has past credits including: ‘The Island with Bear Grylls,’ ‘The Hotel’ and ‘Sasha: Beauty Queen at 11’.
