Manchester’s Kilogramme has completed a tight-turnaround film for the Whale and Dolphin Conservation charity.
The studio was approached to relay the findings of a recent report on chemical pollution in the oceans.
“The deadline was pretty tight, as the film needed to be completed by the end of June, giving us just over four weeks to deliver, but as soon as we read the script, we knew we would just pull out all the stops to get it done,” said Animation Director, Claire Grey.
“The film is narrated from the point of view of Lulu, one of a community of Orcas that lived on the West coast of Scotland.
“Sadly, Lulu’s tale did not have a happy ending, but her story is used as a powerful tool to alert people to the problem of chemical pollution in our seas and galvanise them into taking positive action.”
The animation was designed by Maria Samaniego, with the voice over by Sara Starling – who recommended Kilogramme to WDC.
“Working closely with Gabrielle (WDC Content Officer), Carla Boreham (Director of Policy and Campaigns) and Sally Ward (Senior Partnerships Officer), we progressed rapidly through minor script edits to the animatic stage and the film began to take shape,” continued Grey.
“Sara’s eloquent and moving voice performance brought real feeling to the narration and was a gift for the animators to work with. Featuring animation of majestic orcas set against the beautiful backdrop of the West Scottish coast and its underwater sea world, the film has a haunting and memorable quality.
“At the same time as giving the audience the stark facts about chemical pollution, we wanted them to come away from the film feeling that they were informed enough to now do something about it and to want to find out more.”
