Job losses as Mediaworks opts to ‘strategically focus on core digital service’

At least four job losses have been confirmed at Newcastle-HQ’d digital marketing agency Mediaworks as it seeks to “strategically focus on core digital services.”

Mediaworks CEO Brett Jacobson confirmed the redundancies to Prolific North saying: “We have decided to strategically focus on our core digital service lines across creative, performance marketing and web development.

“Despite a considerable amount of time, energy and resource being invested into adding traditional media/OOH to our services, it remains less than two percent of our overall turnover. As a result, we have sadly had to make readjustments to our staffing with the loss of four team members, primarily based in our Edinburgh office.

“We’ve supported a number of key hires over the past three years to help us grow across traditional and OOH media, but we have not able to align progress in this area with the pace of growth across core service areas in other parts of the business.

“We continue to enjoy great relationships with a number of high profile Scottish clients, who continue to receive the extremely high quality of service they’ve always experienced from Mediaworks. Scotland remains a crucial geography for us and we will continue to concentrate our efforts there as an opportunity to grow the agency and create new roles.”

Two separate sources, requesting anonymity, have told Prolific North that the Edinburgh office has closed down entirely as part of the restructuring, however Jacobson insisted the office is open as normal: “Our Scotland office is absolutely open for business and will remain so,” he said. “We’ve a strong pipeline of new business opportunities north of the border, that we’re confident in securing, which will allow us to continue to create new roles across the business and further increase our revenues out of Scotland during 2024.”

Mediaworks’ Edinburgh office was expected to act as a base for at least 30 new jobs in Scotland by the end of this year, according to its own January 2023 launch announcement. The company also currently has offices in Leeds, London and Manchester, and operated an Irish office in Dublin between 2021 and 2022.
