ITV has reported the death of longstanding Granada TV continuity announcer Charles Foster.
Wirral-born Foster was one of the faces, and voices, of Granada in the 70s, 80s and 90s.
When he wasn’t introducing the channel’s shows, Foster was also an accomplished actor in his own right, taking roles in the ITV dramas Coronation Street, Emmerdale and Crown Court.
More recently he provided the voice over on ITV’s Judge Rinder programme, having previously worked on Catchphrase and The Krypton Factor.
Granada Reports’ producer Rob Jaskowski said: “Charles was such a nice person. I remember being star stuck on my first day at Granada on work placement in 1984 when I sat with him in the canteen at Quay Street. He was great to chat with and a true inspiration. Condolences to his family and friends.”
Among the celebrities taking to social media to offer their tributes were professional comedy Northerners the Lancashire Hotpots, who reminisced about what a big part of Granada its announcers played in the past.
RIP Charles Foster. Back in the glory days of Granada the continuity announcers were as much part of your viewing as the programmes themselves https://t.co/Xw8q0NZqJT

Foster is survived by his wife Meg Johnson, an actress who appeared in Corrie, Brookside and Taggart.
