Hull’s MediMusic, which attracted interest from the BBC on launch last year for its unique use of AI playlists to treat dementia patients, has landed £1.2m in new funding.
The investment comes in the form of a £200,000 boost from Finance Yorkshire, on top of further funds from the University of Hull, fellow C4DI business Sauce Consultants Ltd and private investors.
MediMusic offers an app and streaming service for its music-based therapy, targeted at hospitals, dental surgeries and care homes to help manage chronic pain or support patients before and after operations. It has also been proven to ease stress for dementia patients in NHS trials.
MediMusic’s CEO is entrepreneur and former journalist Gary Jones who has written for titles including Dazed and Confused and Untitled, published or co-published several photography titles, and picked up two American PhotoEye Awards in a varied career which has seen him spend the last seven years developing the MediMusic platform.
Previous research with Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust found that the use of MediMusic led to a reduction in heart rate of up to 22 per cent in patients with dementia during the Covid-19 pandemic.
