The BBC has started filming a new Caroline Moran comedy centred around a hen-do which is interrupted by the apocalypse.
Henpocalypse! is currently in production in Wirral and Snowdonia. It is being made by BBC Studios’ backed indie VAL.
The executive producers are Phil Clarke (I May Destroy You), Helen Williams (Flack, Lazy Susan), Jack Bayles (Catastrophe) and Roberto Troni (I May Destroy You).
The series features “bridezilla” Zara (Lucie Shorthouse) as she and her fellow working-class West Midlander hens face a struggle for survival as they “wait out the breakdown of human civilisation in an isolated holiday cottage in Wales.”
The cast includes Elizabeth Berrington (The Responder, The Pact) who plays Zara’s mother Bernadette; Callie Cooke (Cheaters, Peacock) as put upon chief bridesmaid Shelly; Lauren O’Rourke (White Gold, Drifters) as conspiracy theorist beautician Veena; Kate O’Flynn (Landscapers, Everyone Else Burns) as “one woman disaster area” Jen and Ben McGregor (The Tuckers), as “entrepreneurial stripper” Drew.
“It’s no surprise that Caz’s inventive scripts have attracted such a top cast,” said Jon Petrie, Director of Comedy Commissioning at the BBC.
“Her post-apocalyptic vision is both terrifying and utterly hilarious. We can’t wait to see it all come together.”
When they emerge into the post apocalyptic world in a battle for survival, they’re armed with only their wits and a whole car load of hen do paraphernalia. They also find out that the male population has been very nearly wiped out and they face serious competition from a bunch of “radicalised Pilates instructors.”
“This is a dream cast, the locations are epic, the apocalypse has never been so much fun,” said Caroline Moran.
