Future of the post-Leveson press to be tackled at Discuss debate

The future of the press in a post-Leveson world is the subject of the next debate to be held by the Discuss debating forum.

Speakers at the March 26 event in Manchester city centre will include Guardian readers’ editor Chris Elliott, Hacked Off campaigner and journalist Tom Rowland and Bob Satchwell, executive director at the Society of Editors.

Emmerich, Taylor and Carr Discuss founders Mike Emmerich, Michael Taylor and Martin Carr

Discuss was set up last year by Mike Emmerich, Michael Taylor and Martin Carr to provide a forum for debate in Manchester.

Co-founder Taylor said: “Public trust in the press has been hammered and most would back regulation and serious sanctions to curb the excesses we have heard so much about.

“But it is a classic public debate that has more heat than light. The criminal trials prove there is legal sanction already available. Our debate this month will air these issues and more. It is a vital debate for our times.”

The debate – entitled “The press has broken our trust. Discuss.” – will be chaired by writer, PR and media lecturer Debbie Manley. Tickets can be obtained via the Discuss website.
