A former BBC Radio Sheffield presenter has been dropped from Eurosport’s Olympics coverage team over an “inappropriate” joke he made about the Australian 4x100m relay team.
Bob Ballard spent five years at Radio Sheffield before joining the 5 Live sports team in 1997, where he served as the BBC’s main swimming commentator. Following the Australian women’s team’s gold in Paris yesterday, he told co-host, former Olympian and European backstroke champion Lizzie Simmonds that the athletes, who were celebrating together, were late to leave the venue because “you know what women are like, hanging around, doing their makeup.”
Simmonds immediately pulled Ballard up on his remark, saying: “Outrageous, Bob. Some of the men are doing that as well.”
The clip swiftly spread on social media last night:
Bob Ballard hang your head in shame and get off the broadcast and back to the 1930s

Commentating for EuroSport he’s used a sexist slur as the Aussie women RIGHTLY celebrated together

Most of our Olympic posts will be positive, as they should be. But we must call out the bad, too. Things like this remark about Australia’s relay team who had JUST WON GOLD. It rightfully led to this commentator, Bob Ballard, being sacked.

Today, Warner Bros Discovery-owned Eurosport issued a statement saying: “During a segment of Eurosport’s coverage [Sunday], commentator Bob Ballard made an inappropriate comment. To that end, he has been removed from our commentary roster with immediate effect.”
Ballard this afternoon apologised, and wished his former teammates the best for the rest of the games, via X (Twitter):
Right here it is the statement pt 1:

The comments I made during the Australian freestyle relay victory ceremony on Saturday have caused some offence. It was never my intention to upset or belittle anyone and, if I did, I apologise. I am a massive advocate of women’s sport.

I shall miss the Eurosport team, dearly and wish them all the best for the rest of the Olympics.
No further comment will be issued. Thank you.
Not everyone has been so hard on the host, who has himself spoken of the discrimination he faced as a gay man at the BBC in the nineties. Ballard’s colleagues at 365 Radio were quick to jump to his defences
We here at https://t.co/TE6GpLM2np would like to offer our 100% unequivocal support to our respected colleague & friend @bobballardsport

Bob is a caring, dedicated guy, as knowledgeable & passionate about the sport as he is his music & a true consummate professional who’s been…
While others felt the sacking was an overreaction:
If this is what Bob Ballard got removed from Olympic swimming coverage for then holy fuck we really need to grow up as a society.

Not liberal or conservative, just thinking for myself. This is an absolutely harmless joke with zero malice or insensitivity. https://t.co/LPSAzniCDN
Others called for perspective given the controversial list of competitors at this year’s event, including one convicted child rapist in the Dutch beach volleyball team:
Van de Velde – plays beach volleyball.

Meanwhile
Bob Ballard – fired.
This place man.
As social media continues to split into sides on the debate, Ballard has made a final post-sacking plea for users not to “pile in” on co-host Simmonds:
P.s. Don’t pile in on @LizzieSimmonds1 – please! She has nothing to do with this.
