Former Adidas, Asda and Pokerstars exec joins Betfred as product chief

Gaming giant Betfred has appointed former Stats Perform VP of product Nick Cockerill as its new chief product officer.

The industry expert moves into the brand new role for the bookmaker with the aim of elevating the brand’s online business, enhancing its strong retail offering and accelerating the transition of Betfred into a technology first organisation.

Cockerill, who has 10+ years experience in the sports betting and iGaming industry including senior product and technology roles at Sky Betting and Gaming, Pokerstars International and Flutter, joined Stats Perform in 2021. Whilst there he was central to the launch of ‘Instant Highlights’, an industry first, which is now used by some of the world’s largest sportsbooks and was deserving of the SBC Innovation In Mobile award in 2023.

Cockerill’s tenure as VP of product also saw the launch of Runningball for tennis, which provides faster and deeper data for tennis trading, and the Dynamic Betting Stats API, a platform that allows sportsbooks to easily interact with Opta data for players and team stats markets, as well as bet-builders and same-game multis, supporting the explosive growth of Opta based betting in recent years.

At Sky Betting & Gaming, Cockerill led the core and payments product teams during the organisation’s rapid growth period from 2014 to 2018, growing the team significantly and supporting international and in-house technology expansion with the opening of a new office in Sheffield. Following the acquisition of the business by Pokerstars, he headed up the product and design teams for the build of their greenfield international sportsbook.

Prior to these roles, Cockerill worked for Adidas and Asda Walmart in commercial and online trading roles.

Cockerill said: “I’m delighted to join Betfred at such an important and exciting time in their history. Betfred is one of the UK’s strongest brands in the sector and I’m looking forward to working with the excellent team here to elevate Betfred to where it should be as one of the top online bookmakers in the UK and advancing our leadership in retail.”

Joanne Whittaker, Betfred’s CEO, added: “Nick joins with a wealth of experience and has an excellent track record in the sector. His appointment is key to our huge ambitions for Betfred.”
