As the deadline to enter the first ever Prolific North Creative Awards looms, our judging panel tell us what it means to be involved and what they’re looking for.

With the backing of top industry experts from BBC, ITV and Google, the Prolific North Creative Awards will recognise and celebrate all the individuals, teams and companies doing brilliant things across the North’s creative sectors.

At a live ceremony on June 29th at the Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI), the creative awards will feature a special exhibition to showcase top creative work, as well as celebrating our winners on the night.

What do the judges have to say about being involved in these new awards and what does it mean for the creative sector?

“New for 2023, the awards will celebrate and showcase creative talent and create pathways for aspiring creatives. Anything that celebrates the North is always a HUGE win for me,” said Justin Clark, founder of marketing meet-up and network event SocialNorth and JustSocial, a strategic social media consultancy.

All of our judges, which you can find out more about here, take part in a transparent, fair and independent two-step process.

Karl Doran, founder and creative director at Flow Creative, explained that although there are often mixed feelings about entering awards “it’s been a really useful tool for us to get our work out into the world and become established as a studio, especially in the first few years.”

He added: “These days I’m very selective about the awards I enter Flow projects into, and only enter ones I really feel value creativity and craft. When Prolific North got in touch about this one I agreed because they made it clear that it is all about celebrating creativity, especially in the North, something I’m passionate about.”

On what the judges are looking for, Jessica Symons, anthropologist and creative digital consultant with over 25 years experience, shared her valuable tips.

“Make sure that your entry material is strong, compelling and convincing – this is the evidence that supports your claim.”

Alongside paying attention to detail and making sure you evidence your creative journey, she said: “In my PhD, I argue that creativity is an ‘adaptive process when working towards a tangible goal’. So creativity is partly about *responding productively* to criteria (whether self-defined or set by a client) How can you evidence your productive response and to what criteria?”

Karl Doran at Flow will be looking for “brave ideas that make you think or feel something and exceptional craft that bring the ideas to life.”
