Global agency network Dentsu Aegis is to open a new office in Manchester, creating up to 140 tech jobs.

The news, which has been confirmed to Prolific North by Dentsu Aegis, represents a further boost to the city and the North’s wider tech scene.

The exact number of jobs is yet to be confirmed, but they are new roles and not simply being relocated out of London, where Dentsu Aegis Network has its international HQ.

Dentsu Aegis Network – the international arm of Japan firm Dentsu – has a significant presence in the North already through agencies including Carat, gyro Manchester, iProspect, Amplifi and Fetch.

Over 700 people are already employed as part of those Northern operations, around 400 of whom are based at its offices on Portland Street in Manchester with the remainder split between Leeds, Newcastle and Edinburgh.

Earlier this year, Dentsu Aegis Network revealed it had grown total gross profit by 17.1% with a “record” year for net new business amounting to $5.2bn.

In May this year, former Carat Manchester head Rachel McDonald was named as the first managing director of Dentsu Aegis Network’s Northern operations.

Today’s news, which is expected to be formally confirmed next month, is a further shot in the arm for Manchester’s reputation as a growing base for the world’s biggest brands.

Earlier this month, tech giant Amazon confirmed it would be setting up base at Hanover House in the city, hiring 600 tech, digital and R&D roles.

And last week we revealed that WPP – one of Dentsu Aegis’s biggest rivals – were planning to consolidate five of its agencies into a major new Northern base at the former home of Granada Studios.

Others, including The Hut Group, Booking.com and Moonpig, have recently invested heavily in new Manchester operations, and there are strong rumours that at least one other global tech brand is poised to open in the city.

And Manchester is also imminently waiting to discover whether it has beaten Leeds and Birmingham to host Channel Four’s new regional headquarters.
