He will discuss the use of space-age data in commercial markets, before introducing a panel discussion on the use of data to combat the changing climate, which will feature Richard Flemmings, Partner and Technical Director at Bristol-based 4 Earth Intelligence; and David Watson, Executive Director of Audiences & Media at National Museums Liverpool.
The panel will be followed by a keynote presentation by Patrick Gormley, Lead of Capita Consulting – our Headline Partner for the entire Digital City Festival. Gormley will be talking on the subject of ‘Disrupt or die’, discussing delivering digital change in a more effective and innovative way.
An ESA Business Applications spokesperson said: “The commercial application of satellite navigation, imagery, and communications pumps £10 billion a year (and growing) into the UK economy, supporting a further £300bn of economic activity. Think of Uber, or Deliveroo, think of the value of ubiquitous, resilient connectivity in IoT, think of using near real-time data to monitor and model agriculture, or subsidence in the built environment.
“Manchester is a digital powerhouse, and so ESA Business Applications is eager to work with businesses in and around the city with expertise in handling, packaging, and commercialising data. Digital City Festival is a fantastic way for us to do this, and its high profile allows us to extoll the value of Space to the wider public and private sectors.
“The City of Manchester has rightly declared a Climate Crisis, so it is vitally important that the private sector, policy makers, and the public, understand how this affects day-to-day life, as well as economic and civic growth. Data from Space is the leading edge when it comes to monitoring, modelling, and mitigating climate change. The data already exists, historically as well today in near-real time, and it is improving in resolution and scope month by month, year on year.
“That’s why ESA Business Applications has invited one the country’s leading Earth Observation companies to join a representative from Manchester’s local government, as well as National Museum Liverpool’s Creative Director, to discuss how we use data to improve decision making, grow business sustainably, and engage the public every step of the way.”
