Drew Povey, the headmaster who starred in Channel 4 documentary Educating Greater Manchester, has announced his resignation.

Povey and three other members of staff from Harrop Fold High in Salford were sent home on Thursday after an internal investigation.

That investigation – into allegations that the school manipulated the school register to give the impression that the school was performing better than it is – is ongoing.

Povey said he had taken today’s decision “with a heavy heart”, adding that he took full responsibility for the errors, but did not believe they “constitute grounds for me to be pursued in the way that I have been”.

“This feels very much like a personal vendetta and I hope that by removing myself from the situation, that some semblance of normality will return to the school, for the benefit of all,” he said.

Once branded one of the worst schools in the country, Harrop Fold improved to the extent it was graded as ‘good’ by Ofsted.

Channel 4 has been filming a second series of the show at the school.
