Danny Baker to bring back axed 5 Live show as a podcast

Danny Baker, who was sacked by BBC Radio 5 Live last month following accusations of racism, says he is bringing back his show as a podcast.

The broadcaster was sacked after tweeting an image of two people holding hands with a chimp dressed in a suit alongside the caption ‘Royal Baby leaves hospital.’

Baker said that he had not recognised the racial connotations of the tweet because his mind was not “diseased”. However, the BBC cancelled his show, with a spokesperson describing the tweet as going against “the values we as a station aim to embody”.

The DJ, 61, said on Twitter that his new podcast would be released twice-weekly and feature the same elements as his 5 Live show.

“My own standalone podcast, featuring all the old firm and even the Sausage Sandwich Game, will begin in the new year,” he wrote. “Emails encouraged, calls taken, subjects bizarre. A twice-a-week meeting, we can rule the world.”

Baker added that he had altered his social-media habits in the wake of the controversy. “I only nip in [to Twitter] for half an hour a night now. Learned my lesson.”
