Coronation Street newcomer confirms shock exit just months after joining ITV cast

Joe Layton

Coronation Street newcomer Joe Layton has reportedly left the ITV soap just months after joining the cast.

Layton, who plays Mick Michaelis, arrived on the cobbles earlier this year alongside on-screen partner Lou, portrayed by Farrel Hegarty.

His character quickly became central to a dramatic storyline, which revealed Mick as the person tormenting long-standing resident Chesney Winter-Brown.

Reports now suggest Layton’s departure was always part of the plan, with his role intended to be temporary. According to The Mirror, Mick will remain on screens until late July, with “lots more to come” before his exit.

Mick and Lou made an immediate impact upon their arrival, forming connections with Chesney and Gemma.

Reflecting on his time on the show, Layton said: “Coronation Street is such an institution in British television, and to get to walk down the cobbles in Mick’s shoes is so exciting. To also do it alongside Farrel is awesome – we are having great fun together and connecting really well whilst developing our characters.”

He added: “It also gives the opportunity to get a look behind the curtain of this huge machine and be a small cog within the big picture of Coronation Street and to work alongside people who take such pride in their work. It’s just a really happy place, friendly and welcoming. I’m going to relish every moment of it.”

Layton had previously expressed enthusiasm about playing a villainous role, saying: “I really enjoy playing what people would refer to as a baddie or a villain, because for me the most interesting thing is how we move past the first initial judgment of them, especially when you’re going to be playing them.”

Mick’s exit storyline is set to unfold in the coming weeks. Coronation Street is on ITV1 and ITVX.
