A new director will walk away with an hour-long commission from Channel 4, with the return of the First Cut Pitch to the Sheffield Doc/Fest.

Five first-time directors get the chance to pitch at the event, with the winner getting a 1x60minute First Cut commission, industry development, mentorship and training.

“The First Cut Pitches at Sheffield Doc/Fest have always produced lively and entertaining panels and I’m excited to discover more exciting fresh directorial talent at this year’s event,” said David Brindley, commissioning editor for First Cut at Channel 4.

Applications close at midnight on Sunday 6th April and the successful directors will produce a 3 minute film about a set brief, which will be screened in front of a panel of judges.

As well as the commission, directors will receive a month fully-paid development and mentorship with an indie (£5,000 development cash) to either further develop their own idea or the indie’s, plus one week’s NFTS training (plus wages for that week).

Applications are open to anyone working within factual television who hasn’t directed their own documentary on network television.
