Channel 4 hit The Gathering, from Line of Duty producer World Productions, has been axed by the broadcaster after just one season.
Helen Walsh’s series about a violent attack on a teenage girl during a rave was touted by Channel 4 execs as a major streaming success after it drew a 3.2m 28-day audience, as well as a 1m opening night audience for the premier – well above C4’s slot average at 7.9%.
World Productions’ Simon Heath told The Sun the show had “performed very well for Channel 4 but there are new people in charge and new priorities, meaning The Gathering won’t be coming back.”
In March this year, former head of drama at Channel 4 Caroline Hollick was one of a series of high profile commissioner departures at the broadcaster as part of the broadcaster’s redundancy consultation, which saw the loss of 240 roles. In the same month, Ollie Madden was also confirmed to be taking on a newly combined role of director of Film4 and Channel 4 drama.
Boiling Point’s Vinette Robinson starred in the drama, alongside young up-and-comers Eva Morgan and Sadie Soverall. The show centred on a violent attack on a teenage girl on Merseyside.
