BBC colleagues have hailed the “astonishing bravery” of Rachael Bland after the 5 live presenter and podcaster revealed she had just days to live.

Bland, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in November 2016, has documented her battle with the disease through her blog Big C Little Me and the You, Me and the Big C podcast she co-hosts with Deborah James and Lauren Mahon.

Bland, who lives in Cheshire, was told in May this year that her cancer was incurable and that her only hope rested with a clinical trial.

But in a heartbreaking tweet yesterday, the 40-year-old revealed that she had been told she only had “days” to live.

Many of her BBC colleagues were among thousands to send supportive messages in response.

Fellow 5 live presenter Nicky Campbell told her: “You are an astonishing human being. Love to all.”

A selection of other messages are below:

Chris Mason, BBC reporter: “Thinking of you Rachael — and of Steve and Freddie too. You are an extraordinary person to work with and listen to. It’s clear for all to see what a brilliant Mum, wife and broadcaster you are too. It was always an incredible privilege to share the airwaves with you.”

Emma Barnett, BBC 5 live presenter: “You are a Wonder Woman and I am sending you so so so much love and strength to you, your husband and your lovely little boy xxxxx”

Christine Talbot, ITV Calendar presenter: “Rachael, I have watched in awe at all you have done to help people going though this horrible illness. I know from experience how much it means when there is someone willing to talk about it.”

Adil Ray, actor and writer: “A real inspiration to us all. Big love to you and your family. Such courage and grace. Xxx”

BBC presenter Victoria Derbyshire: “Courage, grace, laughter – that’s you. You are amazing.”

Bland, who was previously known by her maiden name Hodges, has been a BBC news presenter for more than 15 years.

Last month she told the Sunday Telegraph: “I’m not scared of dying. I only fear for those I leave behind.”
