BBC Breakfast’s Dan Walker has revealed he will be moving to Channel 5 News in the next few weeks, calling it a “massive decision” to leave the corporation.

In a video posted to Twitter, Walker said he loved BBC Breakfast and the team around him, but “Channel 5 came with big ambitions, with big plans, and I don’t think opportunities like this come around very often.”

Speaking about his new role he said: “I not only get to present the news, but also host a whole range of new programmes across the channel.

“What an honour to step into the shoes of Sian Williams,” he added.

Dan Walker has been a daily feature on BBC Breakfast, which he presents alongside Sally Nugent from MediaCity, since February 2016 when he replaced Bill Turnbull. He also presented Football Focus until a year ago, having joined the show in 2009.

In the most recent BBC salary report, Walker was revealed to be on a package worth £295,000-£299,999.

An alumnus of the University of Sheffield, he was previously a presenter on Manchester’s Key 103 (now Hits Radio), having started his career at Hallam FM. He later moved to Granada Television as a commentator on the Football League Review show, before going to North West Tonight.

Richard Frediani, Editor of BBC Breakfast, said in a tweet: “Dan Walker has been a brilliant Presenter on #BBCBreakfast for more than 6 years. From Tony’s flypast and highlighting loneliness with Terrence to special programmes including live from No 10.

“Thanks for your time on the red sofa and your friendship to all on and off screen.”
