Manchester-based indie Blakeway North has been commissioned to make a 10-part Nikki Lilly Bakes series for CBBC.

When lockdown was announced, the production company was finishing a third series of Nikki Lilly Meets for the channel. The final episode, which features Joe Wicks, was shot via Skype and has gone live this week.

“Lockdown presented us with a perfect opportunity,” Blakeway North said. “With no school, Nikki suddenly had time on her hands, and luckily loved our commissioner Kez Margrie’s idea of a quick turnaround series of baking shorts.

“The challenge was, within all the rules of self isolation, could we pull them off with no physical access to Nikki? With some trial and error, we worked out how to film the bakes with Nikki’s mum and dad Tanya and George behind the cameras – directed remotely by producer Launa Kennett.

“Each episode will focus on one simple bake that contains practical and educational information about how to replicate the bake at home.

Sarah Murch, Blakeway North MD and Executive Producer, added: “With most British TV production on pause, it has been lovely to think creatively about how to make content differently.

“We’ve certainly torn up the rule book but the bakes look really fantastic and Nikki and her family have done a brilliant job.”
