David Gower has returned to the BBC after 20 years by presenting the sport on Radio 4’s Today programme this morning.
The former England captain’s contract as a commentator has not renewed by Sky, meaning he will leave the broadcaster after two decades at the end of the current Ashes series.
Many listeners were surprised to hear him presenting the bulletin on the Today programme this morning. It is not clear whether he will become a regular fixture on the show.
Gower was once a BBC stalwart, working as a main commentator on their cricket coverage in the 1990s, as well as being one of the team captains, along with Gary Lineker, on the popular sports panel show They Think It’s All Over.
He revealed that he was leaving Sky in an interview with The Times in July.
“If one was being pedantic, being retired would be more accurate,” he said. “After 20 years, they have decided not to renew my contract. At least I have an Ashes series to do — and if destiny is still smiling on us and England manage to win, that would be a nice way to finish.”
In 1985, Gower captained England to an Ashes victory on home soil.
