BBC SPOTY honours Usain Bolt with Lifetime Achievement Award

Eight-time Olympic Gold medalist, Usain Bolt, is to receive the Lifetime Achievement award at BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2022.

The event takes place at MediaCity next week.

“I feel accomplished. I’ve accomplished all I wanted to in my sport, so it’s just a great feeling to know that with [the] determination and sacrifice that I put in that I could accomplish what I wanted to,” he said.

“I always try to motivate people and say listen, believe in yourself and just go out there and do your best.”

A 19-time global champion, he set the World Record in the men’s 100m at the Berlin World Championships, with the time of 9.58seconds.

Days later he broke the World Record for the 200m with 19.19seconds – beating his own previous record.

He remains the only athlete to win both the 100m and 200m titles at 3 consecutive Olympics (Beijing 2008, London 2012 and Rio 2016).

Previous winners of the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Lifetime Achievement award include Billie Jean King, Pelé, Bobby Charlton, Tanni Grey-Thompson, David Beckham, Jessica Ennis-Hill, Chris Hoy and last year’s winner Simone Biles.

BBC  Sports  Personality  of  the  Year  takes  place  on  Wednesday 21  December  at  6.45pm on  BBC  One.
