The BBC has confirmed that this year’s Sports Personality of the Year awards will take place at MediaCityUK in Salford.
With so many major events in the sporting calendar cancelled this year due to the coronavirus pandemic – including the likes of Wimbledon, the Olympics and the Euros – the broadcaster has said this year’s show will also reflect how ordinary members of the public have used sport “to keep the nation going through challenging times”.
Barbara Slater, Director of Sport, said: “As we know, it has been a strange and unprecedented year, but we have still been fortunate enough to see plenty of sporting highlights which we look forward to honouring on the night. The sixty-seventh BBC Sports Personality of the Year award promises to be another exciting and tough choice for audiences.”
Last year, BBC Sport’s in-house production team retained the contract to stage and produce the BBC’s flagship sports awards programme. The three-year deal runs until 2021, with an option to extend for a further two years.
Sports Personality of the Year will be filmed at dock10’s studios at MediaCityUK and will air on BBC One on December 20th. Nominations for the BBC Unsung Hero awards 2020 are now open.
The programme was last hosted in Salford in 2011.
