The BBC has revealed further details of its plans to mark Hull’s year as City of Culture.

There will be a UK premiere of the musical dramatisation Anthony Burgess wrote to accompany his masterpiece A Clockwork Orange, which will be part of the BBC’s four-day spoken word festival Contains Strong Language.

Other highlights include a series of Hull UK City of Culture specials to be made by BBC Look North and broadcast on the BBC News Channel, and a BBC Four documentary looking at how poet Philip Larkin captured the spirit of the city through his photography.

The BBC has already broadcast hundreds of hours of coverage of Hull 2017, living up to Director-General Tony Hall’s commitment that the BBC would be ‘Hull-centric’ throughout the year.

“It’s been a huge privilege to be a partner of Hull UK City of Culture, and I’m proud of the commitment the BBC has already given to the city throughout the first few weeks of 2017,” Lord Hall said.

“Across the BBC, from local broadcasting to national flagship events, network documentaries and ambitious outreach projects, we are making sure our audiences far and wide know about Hull’s special year – and our part of it.

“Hull’s story needs to be told, and what we announce today is just a flavour of what to expect. I believe our hard work and partnership with Hull 2017 will leave a lasting legacy.”

Martin Green, Director Hull 2017, added: “The partnership between Hull City of Culture and the BBC is helping to define the city and the project in the eyes and ears of the UK. Only the BBC can help us ensure that this is a local celebration and a national arts quadrenniel.

“The BBC continues to deliver some of their key events to the city and have helped co-create new national arts events.”
