The BBC Philharmonic will be running interactive digital content alongside its performances at The Bridgewater Hall next season.
It means audiences at the Philharmonic Lab concerts will be encouraged to keep their phones on. This will give them access to“live” programme notes, synchronised to the music.
All concerts will be broadcast live, or recorded for BBC Radio 3.
“With new music, new technology and new audiences, the launch of Philharmonic Lab demonstrates our commitment to combining the familiar with the new and the neglected, both with the music we perform and the way in which it is presented,” explained Simon Webb, BBC Philharmonic general manager.
“In a world dominated by technology, we are harnessing the power of the new to bring great orchestral music to as wide an audience as possible.”
The BBC Philharmonic is based at MediaCityUK in Salford, and has been working closely with the BBC’s digital teams on the new BBC Philharmonic Lab technology.
Last season the orchestra saw a 40% rise in younger audiences compared to previous seasons.
Those using the new technology will be seated in specific areas, so as not to disturb more traditional concert-goers.
