BBC orders second series of Screen Yorkshire-backed Peaky Blinders

The second series of BBC 2’s interwar drama, Peaky Blinders, is due to start filming next year.

Produced by Caryn Mandabach Productions and Tiger Aspect, the first outing drew audiences of around 2.4m.

While it was set in Birmingham, the majority of the filming took place in Yorkshire and Liverpool.

Created by Steven Knight, Peaky Blinders is part fact and part fiction, the gang getting their name from rumours that they had cut throat razors sewn into the peaks of their caps.

“I am so pleased we will be able to continue to tell this story of a working class family living through extraordinary times in an extraordinary way,” stated Knight.

“The Peaky Blinders will march on to many surprising places and fight astonishing battles as the 1920s begin to roar.”

The new 6-part series will see the Shelby family look to expand beyond their Birmingham stronghold in both the North and the South of the country.

“Shows like this don’t come around very often. Steve’s powerful, unique scripts combined with knock-out performances from Cillian Murphy, Sam Neill, Helen McCrory and the rest of the cast kept the audience gripped,” added Will Gould, Tiger Aspect’s head of drama.

The series was ordered by BBC2 controller, Janice Hadlow and Ben Stephenson, BBC controller of drama commissioning.
