BBC News has appointed Ed Thomas as its new UK Editor.
The move comes as the extended BBC News at One permanently heads to MediaCity this month.
Thomas has been based in the North West for much of his 20-year BBC career. He was North of England correspondent between 2004 and 2016 and for the last 8 years, he’s been BBC Special Correspondent.
In 2022 he won an Orwell Prize for Exposing Britain’s Social Evils and last year was a judge for the awards.
He’s previously won Royal Television Society Awards in 2017 and 2022 for reporting inside Wandsworth Prison and the inequality exposed by Covid-19 – spending months in Burnley to witness the impact of the pandemic.
In the new role he’ll cover UK-based stories “including terrorism, crime and immigration, as well as revelatory ‘on the ground’ journalism from communities across the country.”
I’m incredibly grateful to be appointed the BBC’s new UK Editor in Salford.

Telling the stories that matter in Britain today is a dream job.
I can’t wait to get started. https://t.co/rLgZGuL3zQ
