BBC Sport has appointed Stephen Mawhinney, Radio 5 live’s head of news, as its first head of sports journalism.
Mawhinney’s appointment follows a “very competitive process involving many high calibre applicants”, director of sport Barbara Slater said.
As part of his current role at 5 live, Mawhinney has responsibility for all news programmes and teams and is also the senior news leader for the BBC at MediaCityUK.
His past roles have included editor of political news, editor on the News Channel and deputy editor of the BBC News at 10.
He joined the BBC in 2002 from his position of senior programme editor at ITV News.
Slater said: “Steve will be responsible for leading our news coverage of sporting events, stories and issues on all of the BBC’s sports news outlets. He will also be BBC Sport’s senior point of contact with BBC News both UK and globally.
