Award-winning student turns wildlife passion into debut novel

A award-winning conservationist from Cumbria is channelling his passion for British wildlife into the world of fiction with the release of his debut novel.

Lyndon Howson, an award-winning young conservationist from Grange-over-Sands, has made a name for himself through his work in hedgehog ecology. Now, the University of Chester Master’s student is turning to storytelling to inspire the next generation of nature lovers.

Set for release on May 26, The Blight’s End is a 160-page adventure that follows Hector, a brave young hedgehog, as he battles a creeping environmental threat known as “The Blight.” Through a tale of courage, friendship and resilience, the novel explores themes of environmental protection and the power of small actions in the face of overwhelming odds.

“This story is more than just an adventure; it’s a way to inspire readers to connect with nature and recognise the importance of working together to protect it,” Howson said. “With hedgehog populations in decline, I wanted to write something that blends conservation and storytelling, making wildlife protection more accessible and engaging for all ages.”

Howson’s credentials in the conservation world are impressive. He’s been recognised with several major accolades, including the People of Nature Award, Conservationist of the Year – Fauna, and the Mammal Champion Award from the Mammal Society. He also leads the Hedgehog Friendly Campus Project and regularly speaks at national conferences and wildlife events.

Drawing on this deep expertise, The Blight’s End brings a rare authenticity to the genre of nature-based fiction. “We often underestimate the power of stories in driving real-world change,” said Howson. “Every great movement begins with awareness, and stories have a way of sparking curiosity and empathy.”

Available in hardback, paperback and e-book formats, The Blight’s End is available to pre-order now via Amazon and Waterstones.

“This book is incredibly personal to me, blending my love for conservation with the power of storytelling,” added Howson. “Whether you’re a nature lover, an adventure enthusiast, or simply looking for a heartfelt story, The Blight’s End has something for you.”
