Recharge Industries has made an 11th-hour bid for Britishvolt, which went into administration 10 days ago.
The Australian start-up, which is backed by Scale Foundation in New York said it had made a non-binding offer for the company.
Its founder, David Collard stated he would be visiting the proposed site of the £3.8bn gigafactory in Blyth at some point this week. He would also meet with local politicians before making any formal offer.
He added that a takeover would make “strategic sense” particularly as they were already in the process of building a car battery plant near Melbourne, Australia.
Britishvolt collapsed into administration two weeks ago, with most of its staff being made redundant with immediate effect. It came as the board decided that there were no viable buyers for the factory, which was expected to create 8,000 jobs.
The company had been promised £100m of government funding, but that didn’t happen, as the firm missed construction targets.
The administration is being handled by EY. The government said it would “seriously” consider any takeover bid.
