Alison Steadman is among the actors to join Anna Friel on RED Production Company’s new mini series Butterfly, which is beginning filming in Manchester.
The Liverpool-born actor, best known for her work on Mike Leigh films including Abigail’s Party, is joined by Emmett J. Scanlan (Hollyoaks, The Fall, Girlfriends), Sean McGinley (Paula, On a Clear Day) and child actor Callum Booth-Ford.
Created and penned by BAFTA award-winning screenwriter Tony Marchant, Butterfly is about the acrimonious relationship between separated parents, Vicky (Anna Friel) and Stephen (Emmett J. Scanlan), and their division in opinion over how to support their gender variant child, Max (Callum Booth-Ford).
It’s directed by Anthony Byrne (Ripper Street, The Last Kingdom) and produced by Louise Sutton (Black Mirror, Death in Paradise).
Other actors will include Millie Gibson (Love Lies and Records) and Felicity Montagu (I’m Alan Partridge).
ITV’s Senior Commissioner, Victoria Fea, is overseeing the drama from the broadcaster’s perspective.
RED is behind successful dramas such as Last Tango in Halifax, Happy Valley, Scott & Bailey and Queer as Folk.
