Aimee Lou Wood will star alongside Nabhaan Rizwan and Suranne Jones in a new romantic comedy-drama, Film Club.
Wood, who recently starred in Stockport-based Daddy Issues, has co-created and co-written the series with Ralph Davis, who also stars.
“I’m thrilled that our beloved TV series Film Club, a project that Ralph and I have been writing for the past decade, starts shooting this week,” she said.
“We couldn’t be more excited, and grateful, to the incredible team we have assembled with the BBC. To bring this to life with Nabhaan and Suranne, two exceptional actors I have always admired, is a real honour.”
Shooting is now underway in Manchester in what’s described as “a piercingly funny and utterly heart-warming screenwriting debut.”
The series starts with Evie (Aimee Lou Wood), who hasn’t left the house in 6 months after a ‘wobble’, and Film Club is her escape. A weekly chance to create a world of wonder, deck the garage out in whatever the movie calls for and spend a few uninterrupted hours with Noa (Nabhaan Rizwan)- her best friend and one of the few who still shows up.
But tonight, he announces that his dream job will take him to the other side of the country and everything is set to change and they have to consider “for the first time they might be more than just friends. Neither of them are the best when it comes to emotions but this time those emotions might be impossible to ignore.”
As well as all of this, she’s living with her “fiercely loving single mum Suz,” (Suranne Jones), sister Izzie (Liv Hill), and handsome boyfriend/sometime man of the house Josh (Adam Long).
“I’ve loved Aimee for a while now and think she is a beautifully real, honest and brilliantly funny talent, so it was no surprise the script she and Ralph Davis have created was the same. It’s smart, sweet and punchy. I can’t wait to be her tiger mum… and I get to film in my home town too,” added Jones.
Co-creator Ralph Davis will play Dominic, Film Club’s newest member.
It’s set to air on the iPlayer and BBC Three next year, Film Club is being made by Gaumont (Obsession, Locked In, The Wives).
Alison Jackson, President of Gaumont UK and executive producer on Film Club said:
“We are delighted to announce these wonderful actors – we couldn’t be more thrilled to have our dream cast for this precious show. It’s a real reflection of the fabulous scripts and we can’t wait to bring them to life.”
The 6×30 minute series was commissioned by Lindsay Salt, Director of BBC Drama, and Fiona Campbell, Controller Youth Audience, BBC Three and BBC iPlayer.
