Manchester PR company Bottled Imagination hired an AI to work full time in their team for two weeks as digital marketing manager, but sadly ‘Aimee’ didn’t pass her probation.
Bottled Imagination found there had been a 294% increase in the last month in people searching on Google for “is AI going to take my job?” Goldman Sachs recently predicted 300 million jobs could be replaced, amidst general sentiment of worry and stress about AI replacing jobs.
To see whether an AI is up to the challenge and could really replace a person, Aimee was hired by the PR company as Digital Marketing Manager.
ChatGPT and Google Bard were interviewed for the job, and ChatGPT came out on top.
Bottled Imagination used their standard interview questions to choose an AI platform to use as their ’employee’.
Using generative AI tool Midjourney, an image of Aimee was created following the exact prompts given by ChatGPT when asked to describe its appearance as digital marketing manager.
Aimee was great at some tasks but poor at anything requiring creativity and originality, the team learned.
Bottled Imagination used the messaging platform Slack to communicate with Aimee, putting questions into ChatGPT and using her exact responses to send back to the team. It found that the less subjective the task, the better Aimee performed.
She was able to translate blog posts and social media copy at the speed of light, however when asked to write these from scratch they were very repetitive and had questionable data sources. Aimee also only had a knowledge database of up to 2021 which made her job in digital marketing difficult in 2023.
Aimee even appeared to briefly forget she was a computer, agreeing to turn up for after work drinks.
Bottled Imagination ultimately chose to let Aimee go, and despite there being a place for AI to complement humans in the workplace, it doesn’t feel that AI will be replacing roles in the company any time soon.
Katy Powell. PR director & co-founder said: “We wanted to see whether we could rely on AI to complete the tasks of a digital marketing manager given the worry in the UK at the moment about jobs being replaced by AI. Rather than test tasks individually we decided to fully integrate Aimee into our every day, using Slack powered by ChatGPT to speak to her. We’ll continue to experiment with AI but won’t be hiring another any time soon.”
