A new group has been launched to grow the North East’s advanced material electronics sector, which is used in satellite and mobile communications, connected devices and cameras.

Set to be worth £447m to the region in Gross Value Added by 2026 and supporting 4500 jobs, North East Material Electronics cluster group (NEAME) will showcase North East’s capabilities.

“The North East continues to pioneer and develop new technologies that can have a huge impact on a global scale,” said Paul Howell, MP for Sedgefield.

“The formation of NEAME highlights the strength of the region’s growing advanced material electronics sector and presents an opportunity to develop the skills and the jobs of the future, establishing the North East as a global hub for this technology.”

The group is being led by CEOs and senior decision-makers, who’ll act as a single voice to raise the region’s profile as well as addressing key challenges and opportunities.

“NEAME is an opportunity to showcase this region’s strength within advanced material electronics. What has always struck me about this area is the level of innovation that is happening every day on our doorstep,” explained Richard Gibbs, CEO of Filtronic, which designs and manufactures high frequency electronic modules, which connect telecommunications systems in space, terrestrial 5G mobile networks and aerospace and defence.
